Volleyball Tournament
On April 23rd, we hosted our fundraising event for the semester! We had nine teams participate in the tournament and it was a resounding success. The teams traveled between Aspen Heights and Campus Trails volleyball court. This was such a fun event because it got so many different people involved, even from outside of SWE. This event was not possible without our sponsors, volunteers, and participants. We can't wait for our next event like this!
SWE Night Out
On February 25th, our section for our SWE Night Out! Once a semester, our section gathers off campus to share a meal together! This time, we met at Sweet Pepper’s! On Saturday, February 20, we volunteered at Christian World Missions in Starkville, MS. They are currently in the process of constructing classrooms and an activity center in the back of their current building. We assisted with nailing in floors, putting up walls, and constructing supports for ceilings. Additionally, Christian World Missions was hosting a retreat for local children in at risk neighborhoods and we helped package food for them and load their van.
Rapid Resume Review
January 26th, our section held an event that was unlike any other! Thanks to DOW Chemical,
we were able to host a Rapid Resume Review, where our members were given the opportunity
for some extremely rare oneonone time with representatives from companies that are looking
to hire new graduates. Each participant signed up to have their resume reviewed by a
representative from a company of their choosing. During their ten minute resume review, the
company representative told each student what they liked about their resume as well as what
they could afford to change on their resume. Unlike career fairs, where companies only spend
maybe one minute looking at a resume, each resume was looked over for ten minutes. This
helped our members understand exactly what potential employers look at when quickly looking
at resumes. This was also a great opportunity for our members to get oneonone time with a
company they would like to work for in the future. By having this extended time, both the
student and the company benefitted. The student benefitted by learning what they could change
about their resume. The company benefitted by seeing if the student they were reviewing was
someone they would be interested in potentially interviewing and hiring.
We would like to thank DOW Chemical for sponsoring the event as well as the following
companies for participating: DOW Chemical, ADTRAN, Ecolab, AEgis Technologies, Bentley
Systems, Southern Company, Howard Industries, FNC, C Spire.

Kick off Meeting
This was our first official meeting of the semester and it was a HUGE success! We had record
breaking attendance with over 70 people in attendance! Southern Company was generous
enough to sponsor the event for us, providing us with dinner and a panel of engineers that we
all alumni of Mississippi State. The panel provided us with lots of useful information about their
jobs, what it was like to be in the workforce, what to expect when first coming out of college, as
well as other great information about internships and coops! Southern Company is also
generously giving $4,000 scholarships to as many as twelve of our section’s members! We are
so thrilled to have such a great relationship with Southern Company and cannot wait for what
will continue to come from our partnership! What a great first meeting! We can’t wait for what
this semester has in store!

New Kid Social
On Friday, January 15th, our section kicked off the semester with our New Kid Social! This was
an awesome opportunity for our section to spend time together off campus, but more
importantly, for us to meet new potential members! This event took place at our local skate rink,
Skate Odyssey! The afternoon was full of tons of fun, including a limbo competition, won by our
very own Ailish Lynch, a sophomore in industrial engineering from Huntsville, Alabama.
We got to reconnect with members we hadn’t seen over the winter break as well as become
more acquainted with the new people in our section! We had more than 50 people in
attendance! This event was a huge success and we can’t wait to do more events like this one!

Thanksgiving Potluck
On Thursday, November 19th, our section gathered for our annual Thanksgiving Potluck. Each year, right before Thanksgiving, we all get together and have a meal at Dr. Reese’s house. Everyone brings a dish of their choosing, following the Thanksgiving theme. We had green bean casserole, sweet potato pie, and dressing! It's always great to be able to gather together as a group off campus and just be able to spend time with one another. This event is always a success and we look forward to having it again next year!
Be That Engineer
#BeThatEngineer, SWE Mississippi State’s very first outreach event was held earlier this month on
November 7th, 2015. Girls from Starkville High School participated in a half-day fun filled outreach
program. We started off with “Picture yourself here” tour despite the rain, the girls got to see a small
bulldog 3D printed in the library while going to other engineering departments. This was followed by a discussion with SWE girls and women faculty in engineering about different engineering majors and what to expect in college among other topics. Post lunch the girls had a blast solving engineering problems in teams of two. All the girls signed up for SWE Mentors and were super excited about our upcoming outreach event in the spring !

SWE Night Out
On October 29th, our section had a SWE Night Out! This is an event that we’ve had several times that has always been a really fun success. Instead of a normal meeting, we all meet at a local Starkville restaurant and have a meal together! It’s always really great to get the opportunity to spend time with the girls in our section in a fun setting off-campus. This time, we ate a La Terrazza, a local Mexican restaurant, where we all enjoyed chips, salsa, and good conversation! This is always a fun event, and we look forward to having more!
Masquerade Ball
On Halloween, our section hosted the first ever Trick or SWEet Masquerade Ball! It functioned as both a fun social event as well as a fundraiser. This event was held at the Hilton Garden Inn here in Starkville. We had a DJ, a photo booth with tons of fun props, as well as cornhole and ladder golf. We also provided refreshments as well as masquerade masks for people who didn’t have one. The event lasted from 8 to midnight and was a ton of fun the entire time. People were active in all the different areas of the event. We had such a great time with an event this large, and we can’t wait to have more like it!
Grad School Presentation
When the four years of undergraduate studies come to an end, many people just enter the work force with their new degrees. Some people go to graduate school so that they can get a masters or Ph.D. Deciding whether or not to go to graduate school can be a really big decision that can leave students with a lot of questions. Thankfully, Dr. Lori Bruce came to the rescue! She came and spoke to our section about all the different elements of grad school. Where to apply, when to apply, how to apply, and other things like that! After this meeting, we all left knowing a lot more about the graduate school application process, and we’re so thankful for that!
Panel Meeting
On September 24th, we had a professional development panel event. This event was a great
way for our SWE section to hear directly from engineers at Chevron and Dow Chemical about
their experiences at work and school. The event was led by our secretary, Becky, starting off
the meeting with a series of questions for the engineers about successes and failures,
coursework, mentors and other things. After that, our SWE members were able to ask their
own questions. Being able to get advice from both new and seasoned engineers was a
wonderful way to get multiple perspectives on the engineering industry. This event was a huge
success and we can’t wait to have more like it!

Networking Event
On September 22nd, we were fortunate enough to have an incredible networking event at the
Dawg House Bar & Grill in downtown Starkville. This event was a fantastic way for our SWE
members to get some wonderful one-on-one time with some great companies. The companies
at this event, Chevron, Ecolab, Army Corps of Engineers, and Dow Chemical, were very
gracious in giving their time to spend with our SWE section. This opportunity to spend time with
such great companies was priceless and we cannot wait to have more events just like this one!

Mary Kay
On September 17th, our section, along with the help of some lovely Mary Kay consultants sponsored a Mary Kay event! This event was a fantastic opportunity for our girls to get together and have fun getting makeovers while also learning the do’s and don’t’s of makeup in regards to job interviews and the workplace. Learning how to apply a subtle yet professional makeup look is important because it gets a more professional and well put-together impression to potential employers. This event was an intimate affair, only having sixteen girls in attendance, but for an event like this, the numbers were just right! We are so thankful for Sylvia and Jordy, our Mary Kay consultants, for giving their time by allowing us to pamper ourselves and learn at the same time for an evening. We really enjoyed this event and can’t wait for more like it!
Froyo Fundraiser
What’s one thing that everyone loves? Frozen yogurt! What’s something else that everyone loves? Raising money! Where did we get those two great things to meet? Starkville’s favorite frozen yogurt place--Local Culture! What a fun event this was! On Thursday, September 10th, our section hosted a froyo fundraiser at Local Culture, where the proceeds from the night went to help out our section! For every person that came in a purchased froyo, told the cashier that they were with Society of Women Engineers, we got 20% of the profits! It was so simple and so much fun! Being able to have a fun event like this off campus was a great way to explore Starkville for those who are new to the area, as well as get to meet other members in SWE! This event was open to everyone! Anyone who came to Local Culture was eligible to help us out as long as they told the cashier who they were there for! It was a huge success, with the line wrapping around the inside of the store! We’re so thankful for Local Culture’s patronage and can’t wait to host more events like this!
Kick Off Meeting
On September 1st, we had our first official meeting of the 2015-2016 school year! We had an excellent turn out, completely filling up the room that we were in. This meeting served as both a way to get all the new members acclimated to our meetings and a resume workshop. Because of the large number of new students in attendance, we felt that it was very important for us to discuss the do’s and don’t’s of resume writing! This will definitely come in handy with the university-wide career fair being just around the corner! We are so excited by how many people showed up to our kick-off meeting and can’t wait for what else is in store for this school year!
Ice Cream Social
On August 20th, our section got together for an ice cream social and cowbell decorating party! Everyone loves MSU ice cream, and everyone also knows how important it is to make your cowbell your own so you can Ring True all season long! And what better way to meet new and old SWE members than by doing those two things at the same time! We had an excellent turnout of both old SWE members and students new to campus that are hearing about SWE for the first time! It was a great way for new members to get the chance to meet our returning members as well as meet other students new to campus. We hold this event every year, and it has alway been a great way to kick off the school year every fall.
Video Scavenger Hunt
On August 16th, our section hosted the SWE Video Scavenger Hunt. This event was fantastic way for students new to campus to become more accustomed to their new home in a fun and creative way! Each team was given a list of tasks to complete and potential places on campus that those activities would most likely happen. Each team had to correctly match the activity to the correct location, film a video of them completing the task, and upload their video to Instagram using #SWEHunt. One point was awarded for completing the task, another point was awarded for completing the task in the correct location, and a bonus point was awarded for creativity.
SWE learns Cars
On April 22nd, your friendly neighborhood SWE girls gathered up at CAVS to learn the basics in car maintenance. We were taught how to change a tire, change the oil in a car, and how to jump off a car with a dead battery. After learning these things, we were given a tour of CAVS and shown the pride and joy of their facility: ECOCAR and ECOCAR 2. We were even given a little insight of their plans for ECOCAR 3. We had an awesome time learning new things about our own cars and the cars that Mississippi State works on. We loved this event and can’t wait to do it again next year!
SWE learns Self-Defense
On April 18th, our girls learned some basic self defense techniques with the help of several local taekwondo instructors. We learned different defensive moves and were able to practice them on our instructors. We had a great turnout that included several non-engineering students who just happened to see our flyers hanging up around campus. We had such a great time with this event and we can’t wait to do it again next year!
"What Not to Wear" Workshop
On September 17th, Halliburton joined us for our What Not To Wear meeting! This meeting was focused on what is appropriate to wear during job interviews. Members of our section volunteered to put on a fashion show, demonstrating various types of dress that were appropriate or inappropriate for a job interview setting. Each outfit was looked at under close observation to show what needed to be changed or improved. After this meeting, everyone had a better understanding as to what is appropriate to wear to a job interview.
Girl Scout Day Success!
On March 29, SWE teamed up with AIChE for their annual Girl Scouts Badge Day. SWE and AIChE members who sacrificed sleeping in on a Saturday morning, joined in Swalm to help Girl Scouts from across Mississippi earn their science badges. Various activities used to earn their badges ranged from racing noise propelled robots to testing the thermal conductivity in different materials. These wonderful Girl Scouts and their troop leaders spent time in the robotics lab, the unit operations lab, and various classrooms getting hands-on experience in discovering just a fraction of what a chemical engineer might do on a daily basis. Although the Girl Scouts ranged in age from 7 to 18 years old, each young lady found some activity that she enjoyed.

Welcome!
